Fernando

The Artist Behind the Camera

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

FERNANDO

Allow me to reintroduce myself, (yes that was a Jay-Z reference); my name is Fernando, but I also go by Phonando (Photo+Nando). I'm a photographer and filmmaker based in Chicago, Illinois.

The titles that I'm most proud of are "Hubby" and "Dad". I love to have a good laugh, make corny jokes, bring positive energy, and make every moment the best that it can be. I can happily say that I've found the answer to the question "what makes life worth living".

I see myself as an artist and storyteller. Ultimately, I believe the work that I create brings a positive impact on the world. I'll explain, but first, here's my top three.

Husband. Father. Artist. Storyteller.

Family: They're my pride & joy

Art: I'd be lost without it

Faith: It's gotten me through life

Batman fan: My son's middle name comes from Robin.

Mental Health Advocate: Autism, BP, ADHD

My Hair: I started growing my hair as a promise to myself to live a more fulfilling life. 7 years in and still going strong!

Hobbies (now): Learning music theory and playing the piano

On the surface level I'm a photographer, but it goes so much deeper than that. I'm a Storyteller who chooses to use a camera as my conduit.

Don't underestimate the power that a story has. Our stories in many ways define us, empower us, guide us, and inform our current and future generations of where they come from.  Think about the people that mean the most to you; your spouse, children, parents, friends. Now think about every great moment that you've experienced and will experience with them. Can you place a value on those moments and what you'd trade for them?

The way I see it, everyone has a story meant to be told.
Here's the reality; everyone we care about won't be here forever. All of our lives are priceless and can never be repeated. At some point, we're going to wish we could relive those moments, hear their voice again, and see the faces of the people we miss. We'd give just about anything to be with them again.

Through my gift of illustrating life's journey, I want smiles and experiences to live on. I want to look back at my Wedding to relieve it, I want to reminisce on days at the park with my son, or my daughter's first game as cheer captain. These invaluable moments aren't exclusive to my story. Someday my son is going to look back at the fun we had, and our traditions.
